  • Update

With my wife, Veena, not getting a transfer immediately after marriage, I moved to Chennai for a couple of months. My stay in Chennai was at TGN Guest House. I’d like to mention a few words about my stay there so that this article will serve as a review for TGN Guest House as well.

Among the various guest houses in Chennai we had considered, this was the only one other than http://www.chennaiguesthomes.com/ which came for a reasonable price. The 1 BHK guest house costed us Rs.12000 per month (exclusive of water and electricity charges). But we faced quite some problem with the service. For anything we needed, we had to call the owner, Babu many times. Also, though we were promised uninterrupted water supply, it was our responsibility to call up the water tanker provider everytime. Some of the main items such as Fridge, kitchen utensils, cots, etc. were provided very soon (on the day we moved in or within a week). But some of the smaller things such as mosquito meshes were postponed a lot. Though these were small issues, the delay caused us quite some inconvenience. Overall, Veena and I felt that the owner was not greedy for money but the service was bad (this could be because he had employed less number of persons).

Anyway, I returned to Hyderabad on Feb 21 and since then, it has been an extremely hectic schedule. We should be soon moving to a new home and I hope things will settle down by then.

  • At last, the D-Day arrives

To all my blog readers and lovers, I am now leaving to Nellore for one of the most important occasions of my life – My marriage with Veena. The marriage is on 21st October, 2009 morning. This marks the end of my bachelor life 🙁 and the beginning of my marital life :).

  • A surprise gift from my late grandfather

Today happens to be Dussehra. I was seriously working on something when my aunt called me and told me that I had gift from my grandfather. I didn’t understand what she had meant as my grandfather had passed away in February. I thought that she meant my grandmother would be giving me the gift and it was supposed to be from both of them.

And she handed me over a cover with money with the amount written neatly on the cover in my grandfather’s hand-writing. Then it struck me that my grandfather had planned this before his death itself. He had kept aside the gift for me and my wife and asked my aunt to hand it over to me when I was getting married.

During the past few years, the emotional dependency on my grandfather had reduced and his death about eight months back had not disturbed me much. But in a very indescribable way, I often feel his void and wonder why he is no longer with us. And I think this is true with all of his grandchildren.

A very thoughtful gift indeed. Thanks Tatha.

  • A Two Year Old Pending Gift

About two years back my friend and IIIT classmate Swetha told me that she would like to gift me something. I told her that I’d let her know when I really need something. That is because then everytime I look at the gift I’ll get reminded of her :). And now after two years, I finally asked her to gift me the linksys router WRT-610N. And all I can say is that it is an awesome gift. The Linksys WRT-610N is a high-end home router. In India it costs about Rs.10,500. It works out to be about 30% cheaper when purchased in US. Swetha has done her MBA from one of the top institutes in US and is coming back to India after working there for sometime. I was initally apprehensive about asking her to purchase the router over there and gift me because Linksys does not provide gloabl warranty for that router. And if there were any issues with it, I’d have to send it back to the US for getting it replaced/repaired for free. But luckily the router is working fine and hopefully it won’t give any issues. Below is the thank you mail which I had sent to Swetha after seting up the router which she gifted. The mail also gives an idea about the main features of the router. For more information about the router, you can visit http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WRT610N.

    Hi Swetha,
I thought I had already put you a mail reg. this. ROUTER AWESOME UNDI !!! I
just set it up day-before yesterday morning. I removed the proprietary
linksys firmware and installed an open source firmware dd-wrt. My wired
network is now upgraded from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps and wireless network from
Wireless G to Wireless N. Apart from this, I have fixed the 40 GB of my old
laptop to the USB Port of the router and it now functions as a NAS (Network
Area Storage) to which I intend to write daily backups. So if anything goes
wrong with my PC and/or laptop (crashed/hacked etc.) I still have a proper
backup to restore immediately 🙂 . Now don’t u think that’s one heck of a
router 😉 . Reviews have suggested that heavy usage of the router causes
heating problem but let us hope I don’t have to face it 🙂 . I am definitely
going to blog about this when I get time 🙂 . Thanks a ton for the wonderful
gift. It is worth every penny. And with the purchase of a new HP all-in-one
which has been sponsored to us by a medical company, I don’t think I will
be making any upgrade to my home IT infrastructure for a very long time now
    🙂 .

    Regards,
    Rahul.

  • Unexpected Feedback

My website is not just a passion. It is a means for me to connect in a very indirect way with people from all over the world. It is about sharing with the world the knowledge I have. It is an interface through which I share my thoughts and what’s happening in my life. Below are some of the mails which I got as a feedback which only reinforce the purpose of my site. And therefore encouraged by mails like these, I have added the Guestbook module to my website. Feel free to sign the guestbook if you like the website.

    Dear Rahul,
How are you? You must be wondering who I am. Well, lets just say I am your admirer. All my life I have been wanting to lead a scrupulous and righteous one. But, as people say the system gets to you. As I grew old I started hating this line and decided to do something about it instead of just yapping like most Indians do. I volunteered and still do for various NGOs and could not appreciate India more.

Now, this is not about me. I just wanted to thank you for everything you have done so far. Your blogs have given many people like me that we are not alone in this fight to transform our beloved country positively and that the youth does indeed have the power to sow seeds of positive change.

In fact it was your article on how to obtain a driving license inspired me to navigate my way through the swarming brokers who can get you a license illegally and stand in line to get an LLR and a permanent one. You have no idea the amount of impact that had on me. In fact the satisfaction that I did everything on my own was boundless.

I am only surprised that you have decided to stop the comments of that particular blog. I know how daunting it might be when people misuse it and demand answers from you like are a 24 X 7 RTA worker. I guess it was the right thing to do. Now, I just hate thanking people, since I am more of a doer. So, as a token of my gratitude please accept this link of mine where I have written a complete guide on how to obtain an international license – http://magnificent-hawk.blogspot.com/2009/08/obtaining-international-driving-permit.html

Please do not misunderstand me and think that I am publicising my blog. I just want you to know that if it helps you or any other person, I would have done what you have done – Not let our country go to the dogs.

I am sorry if I have offended you in any way and would love to hear back from you,
    Thanks for everything,
    ~Avinash

  • Engagement And 27 Birthday

I thought of giving my friends and distant relatives a surprise by posting a blog entry that I’m going to get married soon. But I delayed this for so long that now probably everyone who knows me is informed of my marriage :). And for those who still don’t know this, here is the official announcement. I’m no longer single and ready to mingle (oops … did I just break someone’s heart? :p). I am committed to Veena, a very sweet natured and cute looking girl. She is actually the sister of a very close buddy of mine, Vamsidhar. Our story is not very uncommon. We were initially good friends. Then I got interested in her. But she wasn’t. And then when I let it go, she got interested in me :). Whatever, in the end both of us were interested in each other and decided to take the relationship ahead. Our parents took some time to give their nod. And once that was done, we decided on the engagement and marriage dates. The engagement was held on August 6 in Nellore. And the marriage is to be held this October. So, at last, my bachelor life concludes :)!

About two weeks after my engagement, I was in for a surprise. It was my birthday and my dear friend Shailu (Sailaja) had planned all surprises for me which included a birthday party at midnight, gift from my mom, cake and roses on behalf of my fiancee, a baby pillow and many greeting cards. For the unaware, Shailu happens to be my colleague’s cousin and oh boy, I am so happy to have such a wonderful friend who cares and pampers me so much. And frankly speaking, I feel she is much more to me than a friend. She is a family member. Shailu, if you are reading, this is for you – “I know you hate it when I use words like thank you and sorry. But still I’ll use them :). Thanks for being a part of my life.”.

I’ve uploaded my engagement pictures and birthday photos in my photo gallery. Those who do not have access it can put me a mail requesting for the username and password.

  • The Meaning of Rahul

Rahul, a popular male name in India, has a variety of meanings. The earliest meaning found in the Upanishads is “conqueror of all miseries”. Later use of the word is attributed to the Lord Buddha , who named his son Rahul as he felt that family ties could be an obstacle in the path to renunciation and nirvana. Lord Buddha uttered Rahul when he first saw his son and gave a new meaning “relationship” and “bondage” to this name. Rahul means Moon, Able/efficient in Sanskrit and Pali.Rahul also means “Traveler” in Arabic.

  • Old Age Begins at 27

I cannot agree more with this. Had I been among those whom they had studied, they’d realize aging starts a lot earlier than 27 :p.

  • What a day

Below is an old article I had written for IIIT magazine. I found it while browsing through some old archives. The article was written on July 30, 2003 and probably published a couple of days later.

What a day!!! To start with, the microsoft seminar. There was this seminar
organised by Microsft for students and faculty and they also provided
free lunch. I decided to go (of course free lunch re, how can i not go).
The seminar was not bad. But the lunch was really good – panner butter
masala, chicken (its a different matter that i am veg, but chicken was
served), strawberry icecream , gulabjamum … yummy. They had actually
organised it expecting around 3000 people but only 1000 turned up. So no
    rush. Completely satisfied with lunch!!!

But the actual fun started in the evening. Seriously , it was real
torture. I came back from the seminar and took a nap for one and a half
hour. Now there are some documents which i’ve got to submit in the
police station for passport and i dont know whats the reason that
whenever i go there the concerned person isnt there. He generally sits
in the Pan dabba in front of the police station. I’ve already been 3
times to the police station and this was the fourth time i was going there
(seriously i dont think neone has gone so many times to the police station
just to hand over the documents!!!)

To start with no buses, so had to catch a seven seater. But
unfortunately, seven seater was full in the back. So had to squeeze myself
in the front. And I really dont know what was wrong with the door, after
going some distance, it opened all of a sudden. But thanks to God
Almightly, I didnt fall out (I know re Suji, u must be cursing me for not
falling out, especially after that chat session i had with u yesterday
🙂 . Anyway, i managed to reach the police station.

And guess what, the concerned person wasnt there and they said he
wudn’t turn up today. So i decided to take his res. ph. no and call him up
before coming to the police station next time. Now, our police station,
is a place where things move more slowly than the pace of a tortoise. I
was made to sit there for half-an-hour. And what did I do for
half-an-hour. I successfully solved a case. Not exactly but something of
    that sort!!!

There was a man and a lady who had come there. It seems there was
a quarrel between the man’s bro-in-law and the lady’s son three days back.
The man was drunk and the lady was like the demons they draw in tinkle
digest (red eyes, long teeth, same re). The man was complaining that the
lady’s son had today gone to his sister’s house and had a quarrel with
his sister. While the lady was insistent that his son had gone to that
area only because their relatives stay there. And dont forget the man was
drunk. So like a spoilt tape-recorder he went on repeating the same
thing. Why did u go to my sis’ house ? And the lady (i wonder if she was
drunk too) went on repeating the same thing that he went there to see his
    relatives.

But the important point is “Who was listening to all these
arguments?” . ME ! Who was the bakra?? ME! Who was going crazy ??? ME!!!
And they literally tortured me for half-an-hour. Meanwhie I asked for the
ph. no again. Somehow the constable there this time went in and bought a
book in which the no. was written.

Not to forget I had mentioned that I solved the case. Why? It
seemed that I was the only one literate over there. So I was supposed to
write a MOU (Memonrandum of Understanding) and get it signed by both the
parties. So, after torture for abt an hour, i finally got hold of the ph.
    no.

Finally, I set back to the institute in the seven-seater. But
unfortunately, the front seat was occupied (its not exactly a seat but a
wooden box in the front). But whats so unfortunate abt that ? Because
there was too much rush, I had to carry a boy on my lap all the way back.
And to add to all this torture, the auto-driver started the audio-player.
I really dont know how cud an audio player be spoilt to such an extent.
But the songs sounded like they were remixed.

Oops! Atleast i reached institure safely. So my final decision.
Keeping in mind that i had lost my internship, i’ve decided to work in
that Pan dabba in front of insitute for two months under the assistanship
of the lady in the Pan dabba. This way, i shall be able to prepare for
GRE, do my internship and not to forget get hold of that concerned
    inspector for handing over documents!!!
